Books can guide
Reading invites to go on a journey. And on that journey somethings are – hopefully – learnt.
Just to be clear – these are adventures are NOT to be compared with the one and only massive love letter from our Creator (hint: Scripture).
Though some of them help better understand Him.
Other books guide us on this journey as humans.
Which books actually make a difference?
I don’t know what might be beneficial in this precise moment – that’s between you and God. But my aim is to give my two cents on of the books I’ve read with hope that will provide guidance.
“The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, And the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.”
Proverbs 18:15 (NKJV)
“2 for the price of 1”
For clarity, the price isn’t an actual price. It’s two reviews in one. In case…that wasn’t clear… See, I baked in two short books in this one review for a couple of reasons. You’ll see what I mean in a bit. With that: Let’s get started!
The two books are C.S. Lewis’ “A Grief Observed” and John MacArthur’s “Found: God’s Will” (yes, just like the pictures below).
These two are fairly similar. Both short, both fairly easy reads. One from the 60s and the other from 70s, but they are both written in a format of what could just as well have been long blog articles. That said…I do favour one heavily over the other. See, to me they’re a world apart.
Keep in mind, this is nothing more or less than IMO.
- The one that’s a bit less old, is actually the one with nothing earth-shattering to add. I guess it’s good for some reader who are at on that part of their journey. But it really has no depth to it. It’s okay, even preferable, to lean on the Bible. Yet…at some stage I’m better off just read straight Scripture.
Easy read, quick to get through. Like I said earlier, a blog post.
- 2. The other which has been around just slightly longer on the other hand. This one starts out “in the heat of the moment” and is there for raw, is like an open flesh wound. As its author later on in the book admits too – and that alone gives insight on how we are as humans. This is one of those books you put down and, if you happen to be experience similar, it…guides. It comforts. It lays out human feelings and emotions.
It’s a grief observed.
